How Should We Remember Tamayo Perry?

The Honolulu Emergency Services Department announced at a press conference this past weekend that a "legendary" Honolulu surfer, lifeguard, and actor who starred in the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise passed away due to a shark attack. The sombre tone of the announcement was interspersed with tributes to the well-known and cherished local.

According to Honolulu ESD's Shayne Enright, Tamayo Perry lost her life in the attack that occurred on Sunday close to Goat Island. Perry was forty-nine years old.

See our complete account of Tamayo Perry's life and demise here. Right now, our thoughts are with Tamayo's friends and family.

It's unfortunate that we rarely hear what other people appreciate and find endearing about ourselves.

Even though we might not get to scroll through our Instagram to witness it, it's lovely to see obituaries written by a person's closest friends and family these days, rather than just from a journalist assigned to the obituary section. That outpouring of love and nostalgia usually happens right after we pass away.

In light of that, these are just three of our all-time favourite Tamayo tributes that have been published.

According to Moana Jones Wong

Tamayo had two favourite places: goats and pipes. I'm not sure how many hours I spent in queue at both locations with him and Emilia Perry, his wife. I will always treasure every memory we have together. I used to tease them all the time, saying I was the daughter they never had. Tamayo, you are so very special to me and I adore you. At Pipe, you and Emilia have always been among my strongest allies—along with Goats, of course. We shall always miss you. For some reason, I knew it was you when I heard about someone passing away at Goats today.(maybe because I am familiar with your routine and that there aren't many of us who frequent this location), but my heart fell when I realised it was you. It was dark and gloomy and victory-at-sea when I walked down there just now, but as soon as I planted four flowers in the lava pound and pulled out my phone to take a picture, the clouds parted just enough to reveal the surf location, and the flowers were taken in the water, and I knew you were there. I'm not going to be outside anytime soon. However, I will know that you are and always will be there when I do go back out. He is a permanent resident of this land, his blood flows through these waterways, and he is at home here.

"Oh my god. Weighty news. Brother Tamayo, may you rest in love and blessings. Very beautiful moments spent sitting far within at Pipe with you, getting to know each other better. Thank you for being you! There is always a lovely vibe coming from your spirit, whether it is land or water. Sending you all a lot of love and sadness for the loved ones left behind in the wake of tragedy.

And from Shayden Pacarro

"What a legend from beginning to end! Sad to lose a close friend and hero! The GOAT island mascot is pipeline tamayo! There, he merits a statue for himself!

Tamayo, 49, was a talented pipe specialist, stuntman in Hollywood, a friend, and a father. Earlier today, he was the victim of a deadly shark attack close to Laie, Hawaii. In the days ahead, we hope to hear much more about him from his loved ones and preserve his legacy in our memory. Tamayo, I appreciate your commitment to surfing.
